TERGITOL™ 15-S-9 is a non-ionic surfactant blend often used in research, pharmaceutical and other applications as an emulsifier, dispersant, wetting agent and stabilizer. It is a blend of several alkylphenol polyethylene glycol ethers that can be used in various concentrations and combinations, depending on desired performance and manufacturing purpose.Unlike Triton X-100, TERGITOL™ 15-S-9 is biodegradable and has lower toxicity. Triton X-100, on the other hand, is classified under REACH as a substance of very high concern and can now only be used in the EU with authorization.
TERGITOL™ 15-S-9 is a possible alternative to Triton X-100 and contains a secondary ethoxylated alcohol group, resulting in a "T"-shaped molecular structure. The nonionic detergent is fast and highly soluble, odorless and compatible with anionic, cationic and other nonionic detergents.
The surfactant can be used in various applications, such as isolation, purification and analysis of membrane components, and solubilization of hydrophobic proteins. It is also readily biodegradable according to OECD 301E.
